The following Vanuard article (in the US) may be of interest to many newbies

Vanguard portfolio allocation models

It shows the results from 1926 to 2010 for various AA mixes.

In addition - the Vanguard website today seems to have far more informative and insightful articles than ever before - worth noting and visiting.
