small to none.
I agree with small. But there's already one.

I wonder how soon someone will whine that this "favour" screws up their cash flow (e.g. a senior who depended on it to make up part of their RRIF withdrawal) or moves their dividends into a projected high income year (e.g. someone who was unemployed during part of 2005), etc. ;)

National Bank reports earnings tomorrow........

The stock was off sharply today..inside information? Or just driving down the price so it can rise with good earnings tomorrow?

With earnings likely in the $4.70 range for the year, NA ought to be bumping its dividend by at least 2 cents....to $1.84 annually.

Asrtal Media

Microsoft boosts dividend

Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, has raised its quarterly dividend 12.5 per cent — a penny — to nine cents US, citing confidence in its product lineup and growth prospects.

The company, best known for its Windows operating system, said the dividend will be payable March 9 to shareholders of record from Feb. 17. The previous quarterly dividend was eight cents.

Parkland Income Fund declares special distribution payment

RED DEER, AB, Dec. 19 /CNW/ - Parkland Income Fund (TSX: PKI.UN - News) is pleased to announce that a special distribution of ten cents ($0.10) per trust unit will be payable on January 13, 2006 to unitholders of record on December 30, 2005. The combination of this special distribution and the regular distribution of seventeen cents ($0.17) per trust unit announced on December 15, 2005 will result in unitholders receiving a total of twenty-seven cents ($0.27) per trust unit on January 13, 2006.
The special distribution reflects the strength of the financial performance for the year ended December 31, 2005 and is being paid after due consideration of the sustainability of the regular monthly distributions. Any additional taxable income for 2005 will be retained by a corporate entity owned by the Fund and used to provide a cash reserve which is prudent to mitigate seasonal weakness of earnings that may occur in 2006.

Interesting. Rather than increase the dividend, simply pay a year end special dividend. That avoids committing to a higher payout level that may or may not be sustainable but it also maximizes distributable income into the hands of investors. It also weans investors away from expecting annual increases. They'll get used to the fluctuation of the annual special distribution and don't whack/pump the stock price. I suspect that we'll see a lot more of this from the business trusts at least.

I think that is a sensible way to manage excess cash. BTW PKI had just raised its monthly distribution from 15 to 17 cents in the prior month.
